Patapon

don! don! pata-pon! pata-pata-pata-pon! chaka-chaka-pata-don!

Patapon PSPAfter hearing about Patapon at GDC last week, I knew I had to go and order a copy. Created by the fertile mind of game designer Hiroyuyki Kotani and art director Rolito this is another crazy, but instantly addictive PSP game in the same vein as LocoRoco.

For years the Patapon tribe has lived in the desolate frontier, driven from their home by the evil Zigoton army. Behind the Patapons' cute exterior, lies a fierce warrior spirit that can only be commanded by the beat of their God’s war drum. They wait for the day that the "Almighty" will return, to lead them against their enemies and bring them back to their homeland. Finally, their wait has come to an end as the drums of war are heard once again.

You control the Patapons, who look like the tribal ancestors to Mike from Monsters Inc, by using the four action buttons.  Each button is mapped to a different drum sound, so tapping different songs will tell the Patapons what to do. Of course, as soon as you tap the drums, the little Patapons happily chant the same song back to you, with that addictive and infuriating little voice that is so typical of Japanese games.

Take a look at the trailer after the break, and let me know if you can resist chanting after watching the video. I know I can't and I've already ordered the full version of Patapon on Amazon.
