La Fête de la Musique
June 21st is World Music Day
Tomorrow is the summer solstice, but if you happen to be in France, it's also La Fête de la Musique or World Music Day. This is the day that both professional and amateur musician take to the streets to celebrate music in all it's forms. It's also the only day of the year when all the noise ordinances are lifted and you can party all night without fears that your neighbors will call the police.
Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for culture, the Fête de la Musique is held in more than hundred countries in Europe and over the world. It takes place every 21st June, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. Completely different from a music festival, the Fête de la Musique is above all a free popular fête, open to any participant (amateur or professional muicians) who wants to perform in it. This Music day allows the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere.
I remember being in Paris on that day a few years ago and it was a complete riot, people partying everywhere in the streets, music blasting from all corners, free concerts, and the usual and very typical French enthousiasm to take to the street, a cultural habit they picked up during the revolution.
Sadly there is nothing happening in Los Angeles, but this year for the first time, New-York is participating with a few open air concerts. You can also get a list of all the events around the world from French newspaper Le Monde.
