Panoramio in Google Earth
I found out about Panoramio while opening Google Earth this morning. They just added a new Geographic Web layer which is active by default and contains photos from Panoramio, location based articles from Wikipedia, as well as comments from the Google Earth community. According to Panoramio's Co-founder Joaquin Cuenca:
The possibilities of Panoramio’s extensive collection of shared photos are never-ending. It's a great tool for planning holidays and exploring the World. You can discover a lonely beach close to your hotel or find out if the city center is as exotic as you thought. You can watch Panoramio’s photos at the website and also inside Google Earth interacting with 3D satellite images
This should offer a great boost for Panoramio, which was started last year as a GoogleMap mashup, and is now a full web application allowing you to upload up to 2GB of photos, tag them with their GPS coordinate, and see them as little flags on a map, alone or with all the photos from the rest of the community.
I'm definitely going to add Geocoding information to all my photos on this upcoming trip, so I might test Panoramio when I'm back. In fact I've been talking to a few people both in the VFX industry and outside, and geotagging is a natural extension of photography and I think in time all filmmaking. We are already adding a timecode, which is marking the point in time each images have been taken, so marking their location is a natural extension of that principle.
