Luke Chueh vs Monkey Business
Luke Chueh's first limited edition skateboard was released a few weeks ago at Monkey Business
There are a lot of kowai kawaii (scary cute) artists, that depict adorable little monsters, vampires and zombies. Luke Chueh is not one of them. His style is actually the polar opposite, using cute little animals, like his signature teddybear in doomed, depressive, and usually bloody situations. Luke was formally trained as a graphic designer, and started painting as a hobby, and I like how his strong graphic style and primary colors, still have loose brush strokes and shading style, rather than being ultra precise.
I've created a tool I call “The Color Wheel of Doom.” In my color wheel, I've designated each color with a particular mood or action. Blue represents depression, green represents pestilence, red represents violence and bloodshed, and orange represents insanity. I've chosen yellow and purple to function as “wild” colors that can be used for any scenario I deem fit. However, I've found purple/violet to be a difficult and unsettling color to work with. I guess I simply haven't conceived of any purple ideas.
Skate & Grate (Luke vs Monkey) features Luke's monkey character after a rather disastrous skateboard accident. The limited edition of 50, which is Luke's first production skateboard deck, sells for $80 and is only available via the Monkey Business online store.
