Escama Bags
Made in Brazil from aluminium tabs and nylon fishing line.
Escama
is one of those new companies that combine clever design with ethical
trading to create a line of bags and purses made with recycled
aluminium woven together with nylon fishing line.
ESCAMA, "fish scales"
in Portuguese, is a trio of friends working out of apartments in San
Francisco and Brasilia, Brazil. We all work day jobs and once or twice
a week we’ll dial an international calling card or meet at a cafe to
figure out what we’re doing.
Our partners on the production side – the Cia do Lacre and 100 Dimensão
women’s cooperatives, located in Brasília, Brazil – have been the key
to our success. They are delightful people and it’s been a pleasure to
work with them. By meeting weekly with the coops we’ve come up with a
line that’s more than just a cool concept but is actually fashionable
and functional.
While I don't usually like crochet, I find that the combination of the metallic material and the nylon thread results in a line of bags that are both very soft but with an slightly aggressive urban edge, with the fish scale pattern recalling medieval chainmails.
