The Broth

TheBroth.com is a massively multiplayer, realtime internet application that connects people around the world to interact in a shared global mosaic.

The BrothCreated as a study for various Web 2.0 collaborative and social web technologies, The Broth is a website that lets people create art by moving little colored squares around, litterally becoming pixel pushers.

The global mosaic is made of 1,000 colorful tiles. When you drag a tile, everyone else visiting TheBroth can see it immediately. Collaborate with others or create your own Mona Lisa for all to see! Discover and create truly unique, collaborative art - made by the internet community, in real-time!

The Broth, which got its name from the saying "Too Many Cooks, Spoil The Broth" will also let you create your own room, and make it public of private. I've created a very eclectic mosaic room to go with this site, feel free to go there and push some pixels around.

I also like the fact that the developers have been very open about their process and implementation. There are a lot of interesting tricks that they've used with Javascript and XML (also known as AJAX) to make the application feel interactive. Also interesting is their findings about how the choice of tile colors influences the behavior of the participants, with bright colors creating child-like drawings and less collaborations, and more muted colors allowing larger drawings to emerge.
